Hi Sored, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started doing calligraphy as a hobby after my 6year old daughter was born. I wanted to be more engage with my Bible studying and calligraphy was a great way for me to connect my faith with my artistic side. I started using watercolors with my calligraphy and I completely felt in love. The art of mixing colors in water on paper and creating art everywhere I went was exciting. I became an urban sketcher when I was living in New York City and it has been a great way for me to pay attention to my surroundings. I keep track of life events and places I go by painting them.
I like to learn new techniques and seeing different artists create. Whenever I have the opportunity, I take their classes, and challenge myself. Everything I know, I also teach. I started teaching in NYC, and after 2020, I moved my classes to online teaching only. The majority of my personal art I’ve created throughout the years is being sold as prints but my specialty is to create custom orders in watercolor and calligraphy. You can find all of my art on my Etsy Shop: Sored Hall Studio.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been easy. First, I had to learn how to be more aware on how to manage my time between my family, art, and resources. I had to keep learning, how to create, new techniques, art supplies and how to run a business with finances, online marketing, social media, etc.
Having the support from my husband has been essential. The art business struggles are going to keep going, doing what you love makes it easier on how to handle any issues that might come along the process.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a watercolor artist and calligrapher. I create custom art, sell prints of my own original paintings, and teach online watercolor and calligraphy classes. I am blessed by being able to do what I love and being able to manage my time so that I don’t have to choose. Every single order is very important, I treat each client with kindness and pay attention to every little detail of each art.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was always painting and creating. My dad taught me how to mix colors and how to use my color pencils to create beautiful realistic art at a very young age. I was into dinosaurs so I painted a lot of them. That’s how my love for art started. I was good at sports like swimming and tennis, but also it was very important to me to do good at school. I was obsessed with school supplies! I was very selfish with them, always keeping one tight grip around my full pencil case. I had a great childhood in my country, Venezuela. I also loved dancing and hangout with friends. I learned how to do cross-stitch at a very young age thanks to my mom, so I believe this activity taught me how to be patient, a very in demand skill these days.
